So maybe a little morbid bit of a post for a music blog, but with the close of the year there are the stories out there about murder rates and crime. [Watching The Wire also seems to bring up these sort of discussions] There was a New York Times article about the 100+ murder rate in Newark, NJ - and how it was really high for 2006. Since I'm originally from Baltimore, [and used to hearing much higher numbers be considered 'bad'] I decided to look up a few stats. It turns out that with Newark's 101 and Baltimore's current 253, the rate based on population is almost identical. Too many all around then.......
These maps are pretty amazing:
Murders for 2006
All shootings [fatal and non-fatal] Maybe the bullet my parents pulled out of their roof is from one of these? A couple are pretty close to Harford and Cold Spring.

WOW! And here I am the "Virtual" WebLo Mayor of Newark. Gotta do something about that crime! How did you get the Stats on the Google Map?

Well, I can't take credit for the overlay on the maps - I know Google makes it possible to do this sort of thing but I haven't tried it myself. These I found this way...
Thanks for the comment!

No problem, but a very cool concept if you could actually do things like this on anything....

that is quite cool. Took me a few minute to figure out how to work it. The map navigation is a bit jumpy, but I do like the concept.
